This recipe is perfect for those mornings when your sweet tooth is in full force the second you open your eyes, but you don’t want to feel the sugar crash two hours into your busy day. The cocoa rawnola is grain-free, vegan, and sweet enough to satisfy your need for a morning treat while using real, whole foods that give you the energy you need to conquer whatever life throws your way without feeling sluggish. Plus, it will only take you five minutes and six ingredients to make.

Let’s talk breakfast. Easily my favorite meal of the day – anyone else feel me here? I never skip this first opportunity to eat in the morning and when I traveled to Europe with my family this spring, this was no exception. However, upon scanning the breakfast options at our first hotel in Rome without a pot of oatmeal or milk alternative in sight, I realized that finding vegan options was going to be a slight challenge. Ah ha! But what’s that? The fruit bowl! I happily filled my dish with mixed fruit and tomatoes (still blows my mind that these are fruits) and topped the bright assortment with hemp seeds from home.

From then on, even when other options were available, I ate fresh fruit for breakfast every single day. Bananas, strawberries, kiwis, apples, oranges – I ate it all! It turned out to be the perfect, easy, portable meal for the mornings when I was running around like a crazy person (aka every morning). Plus, it never made me feel sluggish or bloated while we walked the streets of Rome and Paris. However, because fruit alone can only fill you up so much, I often snacked on seeds, nuts, dates or a Larabar later in the morning when I started to get hungry again.

Since returning home, I experimented with creating a recipe that allows me to eat the fruit that I crave in the morning, while combining good sources of protein and healthy fat to keep me full for a longer period of time. This 6-ingredient cocoa rawnola is my answer. The hemp and chia seeds provide plant-based protein and, along with the coconut, sources of healthy fats to keep you full. Plus, the cocoa, dates and cinnamon provide the not-so-guilty antidote to your sweet cravings.

This rawnola recipe is raw (obviously), grain-free and so easy to make! It’s perfect for topping your fruit bowl and satisfying your sweet tooth. It also makes a great dessert! If you are in the mood for a sugary cereal, give this healthier option a go!

Instructions
  1. Add all ingredients to blender.
  2. Pulse until mixture reaches desired consistency, The dates should be seperated and covered by the dry ingredients to form small, soft clumps of rawnola.
  3. Pour your cocoa rawnola over fruit. I like bananas and berries with this recipe but any fruit will do. Enjoy!
